This style of camera is superseding the more traditional box on a stick camera. Its shape makes it less prone to storm damage or vandalism. Some dome cameras are pointed at the desired area to be watched during installation & then locked in place. Others have internal pan, tilt & zoom motors & gears allowing them to be remotely steered from a control room. Generally this style of camera is a bit taller than fixed ones. Dome cameras tend to have deliberately tinted domes so that it's hard for villains to tell if the camera is watching them or not. One disadvantage for film use over traditional cameras is that the viewer also cannot tell at a glance what direction the camera is looking in
