Analogue multimeters were the predecessors of digital ones until about the mid 1980s. Typically they're capable of measuring Volts, Amperes & Ohms, hence the multi. They were one of the most fundamental instruments used by electronics engineers and electricians. Easily carried in a toolbox or used on the workbench.
