Before the advent of affordable consumer video cameras, home movies were shot on 8mm or 16mm film. The more enthusiastic users would manually edit out the out-takes, poor quality footage etc or change the order of takes using an editing block like this. The two sections of film to be joined are held in precise registration by pegs on the base that engage with the film sprocket holes. The film emulsion is scraped from the end of one piece of film, the end of the other piece is roughened, glue is applied and then the second piece is clamped down onto the first and held until the glue dries.
