Being portable, this microfiche viewer would have been primarily intended for use by field service technicians but could also still be used back at the office. It would have allowed them to carry thousands of pages of technical illustrations & documents for the wide range of equipment they were expected to repair or maintain in remote locations. Until such devices as these became available, technicians would have had to carry large & heavy paper files & books around with them. This is fully working & easy to use. Different frames on the fiche can be steered to by turning a left/right knob & an up/down one on the right hand side. The image is projected down onto the screen which swivels down onto the worksurface so it's like reading a book on a table. It all folds up neatly into a lightweight case looking very like a typewriter case. As with nearly all such viewers, this works best when used under subdued lighting.
