Before photography went digital, you had to use one of these in a dark room to make your own paper prints from the developed camera film.
The film image projected onto a sheet of photographic paper laid on the base board is only visible in subdued light. Typically a dark room for black & white photography is lit by a special red, weak darkroom light which adds considerable atmosphere to any scene showing the dark art of chemical based photography.
