Early mainframe computer operator's console/desk with illuminated lamps & switches

Early mainframe computer operator's console/desk with illuminated lamps & switches

This is a prop build of an Atlas mainframe computer console from the 1960s. The coloured square lamps are controlled by a dedicated microcontroller & change state at random times. Please note that the coloured stalk switches on this are 3D printed dummies so must not be operated as they're not robust. Programmers or operators would have typically sat at this desk watching the lights & flicking switches to manually examine memory locations & CPU registers to work out if the machine was misbehaving. Early computers were notoriously unreliable. We have a matching desk to this without the vertical control panel which can comfortably accommodate one of our practical teleprinters as one of these would have been an essential part of any mainframe computer system.
