These were introduced in the 1970s. Their claim that they heated up instantly when the trigger was squeezed wasn't quite correct as they took about 5 seconds to reach working temperature. This became quite annoying if you were doing a lot of soldering. Normal soldering irons take about a minute or so which is why they're left on all the time you're working with them.
