Oddball scientific magnifying viewing device

This looks a bit like a microfiche viewer but seems like it was designed for larger slides as the objective lens is more than 1" diameter. There is a turret lens assembly so the magnification may be varied in 5 steps. There is a measuring scale printed on the internal screen. Probably used in a scientific environment, maybe for viewing microscope slides?
