Almost universally used now in studios for political interviews, chat-shows etc as interviewees cannot always be trusted to know how to handle a traditional microphone - keep a constant speaking distance from it etc. These simply clip onto the collar or lapel of the person with a built-in crocodile clip. There is a long slender lead terminated with an XLR connector that is long enough to reach down to a regular thick studio cable on the floor. The tubular silver ones are probably older - maybe 1980s?
