Until the 1980s, computer hard disks were physically large, very expensive & had capacities of only a few tens of megabytes. Tape spools like this were used to suplement the limited storage & also for backup purposes in case the hard drives crashed. Every depiction of computers in films from the 1950s-1970s featured jerking tape spools as they really were almost universally present in mainframe computer cabinets & were much loved by creatives for their visual appeal.
